What Equipment Do I Need To Create A Podcast?

There is not a single answer to the question, “What equipment do I need to create a podcast?” Different needs and circumstances will necessitate different solutions, but below are a few suggestions that can get you started recording so you can get your creative work onto into the ear buds your audience. If you’re interested in more personalized help in telling your story, fill out this questionnaire.

The four basic pieces of equipment every podcaster must have include: microphone, computer, editing software, and a “studio.”

Before you panic, acquiring the essentials doesn’t have to break the bank.

1. Microphone(s)

While you can record with any microphone, the difference in audio quality between cheap and high quality equipment will be noticeable to even an average listener. Shure SM58’s are middle of the road microphones, that make capture amazing sound for their price point. The industry standard are the Share SM7B’s. This is what the pros use. If you can afford them, they really are worth the money. These both require a soundboard.

If you are using a USB microphone, Blue Yeti’s are an amazing value. It is highly recommended to have one Yeti per person talking.

If you need a sound board consider the Zoom H5 or the Zoom H6 for additional features.

2. Computer

Recording and editing are relatively simple computing processes that most any PC or Mac can handle. However, ensure your computer has the appropriate hardware inputs for your equipment.

3. Editing software

There are a range of editing software’s available for manipulating and editing audio. For the beginning podcaster, GarageBand and Audacity are two excellent free programs.

4. Studio

Where you record can have just as significant an impact on your audio quality as the equipment you use. This does not mean you need to rent or create a studio. However, consider where you record. Background noise (fans, laundry, dogs) will be picked up by a microphone. A room with an echo will affect your sound quality. Find a quiet place and don’t be afraid to experiment with different locations and setups until you get optimal results.

With these four pieces in place, you can begin podcasting your story to the world. As you consider technical details that will aid in producing quality audio, remember to never lose sight of the most essential elements in podcasting: consistency and content!
